THE FACILITIES AND PROGRAMS OF ADULT AND JUVENILE CORRECTIONS IN NEW JERSEY ARE DESCRIBED.
Abstract
CONSIDERABLE CHANGES HAVE BEEN INSTITUTED IN THE SYSTEM FOLLOWING RIOTS AT THE RAHWAY PRISON IN 1971. INMATE PROGRAMS HAVE BEEN GREATLY EXPANDED, BUT STILL REMAIN INADEQUATE. PARTS OF SOME ADULT FACILITIES ARE STILL IN USE EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE CONSTRUCTED IN 1836. MONEY PROBLEMS PRESENT THE BIGGEST IMPEDIMENTS TO REVAMPING ADULT CORRECTIONS. JUVENILE CORRECTIONS, BY CONTRAST, IS WELL FUNDED. MANY INNOVATIVE AND MODERN PROGRAMS ARE IN USE (NEW JERSEY WAS THE FIRST STATE TO UTILIZE GUIDED GROUP INTERACTION). THE BIGGEST STUMBLING BLOCK TO AN EXPANSION OF COMMUNITY CORRECTIONS IS COMMUNITY RESISTANCE.
