These proceedings of the 117th Annual Congress of Correction of the American Correctional Association focus on emerging issues, including human relations, cooperation with and education of the public in prisons concerns, and the supervision and classification of special needs offenders.
Abstract
Several speakers, including the Commissioner of the U.S. Sentencing Commission, addressed the Congress in General Assembly. Sectional meeting papers focused on special services for mentally ill inmates in Bermuda and the development of creative rehabilitative programs for female offenders. A meeting paper delivered to the Litigation Section outlined methods for achieving compliance with court orders and consent decrees while a meeting paper delivered to the Training Section described how corrections officers can be properly trained in the discretionary use of deadly force. The Special Programs section included papers on treating post-traumatic stress disorder, assessing inmate organizations, and evaluating inmates for substance abuse programs. Speakers also addressed issues of juvenile justice, corrections management, an the role of the Federal government and the public in resolving corrections problems. 160 pages.
