Law enforcement agencies need to be prepared to deal not only with the legal ramifications of an incident in which a police officer kills someone in the line of duty, but with the psychological ones as well.
Abstract
Thus, the police officer should be physically distanced from the scene as soon as possible. Meetings with appropriate officials should be scheduled soon, and the officer may need to be assigned to administrative duty or suspended. Other steps should include informing the officer's family and setting up an interview with a police psychologist or counselor. Attendance at a peer support group may also be helpful. Address from which to obtain more information is included.
