This book examines crime-specific problems, critical issues and practices, and the challenges of problem-oriented policing (POP).
Abstract
The section on crime-specific problems contains chapters regarding the problem-solving approach to: burglary, gangs, youth firearm suppression, alcohol problems and violence against women. The section on critical issues addresses: (1) the auditor approach to handling citizen complaints; (2) reducing fear in the schools, managing conflict with student problem-solving; (3) policing business districts, problem-solving in a different context; (4) national survey of municipal police departments on urban quality-of-life initiatives; and (5) the importance of place in the control of crime. Making POP Work presents chapters on: (6) problem-oriented policing vs zero tolerance; (7) problem-solving, problem-oriented and community-oriented policing; (8) assessing problem-solving efforts using graphical displays; (9) personnel performance evaluations in the community policing context; and (10) problem-oriented criminal investigation.
