This report contains statistical tables with accompanying explanatory information concerning the criminal justice system in England and Wales in 2000.
Abstract
This report is primarily comprised of extensive tables containing information on offenders sentenced by offense group and major sentence type; reports by type of court and type of inquiry; court orders; terminations; pre- or post-release supervision; family court supervision; ethnic monitoring 2000/2001; expenditure, staff, and workload; and hostels. This report includes a review of the criminal justice system background, noting, for example, that in 2000 the courts sentenced 1.42 million offenders, which was 1 percent more than in 1999. It also provides a review of criminal reports and criminal court orders. The section on criminal court orders includes information on community punishment and rehabilitation orders, money payment supervision orders, gender and age, offenses, previous criminal history, additional requirements and length of orders, and caseload. Statistical topics of explanation include electronic monitoring, pre- and post-release supervision, family court welfare work, ethnic monitoring, serious incident reports, drug treatment and testing orders, expenditure on the probation services, unit costs, staffing numbers, ethnicity of probation staff, and average workload per maingrade officer. The tables on probation hostels are discussed, noting that minority ethnic groups accounted for between 9 and 11 percent of those admitted in 1995 to 2000.
