THIS PROBATION SIMULATION (PROSIM) GAME IS A SIMULATION OF JUVENILE DETENTION INSTITUTIONS, THE JUVENILE COURT SYSTEM, AND THE COMMUNITY FROM WHICH JUVENILES HAVE COME AND TO WHICH THEY WILL RETURN.
Abstract
TO BE PLAYED BY CHILDREN, DETAINED JUVENILES, OR ADULTS, PROSIM TEACHES VITAL INSTITUTIONAL AND PROCEDURAL INFORMATION, ASSISTS THE PROBATION OFFICER IN COMMUNICATING THE RULES AND REGULATIONS OF THE JUVENILE SYSTEM, FACILITATES MORAL DEVELOPMENT IN DETAINED JUVENILES, AND CONVEYS A REALISTIC IMPRESSION OF LIFE AS EXPERIENCED BY JUVENILES WITHIN THE JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM. PLAYERS ADVANCE ALONG A BOARD WITH SECTIONS REPRESENTING THE COMMUNITY, INSTITUTIONS, AND JUDICIAL SETTINGS AND, AS THEY PASS PROCEDURAL MILESTONES OF DETENTION, ADJUDICATION, AND DISPOSITION HEARINGS, CAN ACCRUE ASSETS (MONEY, A CAR, AN APARTMENT) BY MAKING DECISIONS ON SITUTATIONAL PROBLEMS PROPOSED IN DRAWING CARDS. ILLEGAL BEHAVIOR MAY ACHIEVE QUICK CASH 'RIP-OFFS' BUT WILL RESULT IN WARRANTS OUTSTANDING AGAINST THE PERSON AND THUS PREVENT A WIN. THE DECK OF 65 INSTITUTIONAL-SITUATION CARDS CONFRONT PARTICIPANTS WITH REALISTIC PROBLEMATIC SITUATIONS AND REQUIRE A VERBAL RESPONSE AS TO HOW THE PLAYER WILL BEHAVE. FOR ACCEPTABLE RESPONSES PLAYERS RECEIVE A PROBATION RECOMMENDATION CARD; FOR AN UNACCEPTABLE RESPONSE, THEY RECEIVE DEMERIT CARDS. SIMILARLY, A DECK OF COURTROOM SITUATION CARDS ASSOCIATES ACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR IN THE COURTROOM WITH FORWARD MOVEMENTS THROUGH THE JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
