Abstract
This total amounted to an estimated 1.62 percent of all adults in the United States. The number of males on probation or parole was 2.84 percent of all adult males. The total number of adults under institutional or community-based correctional supervision reached a new high of more than 4 million in 1989 and amounted to 1 in every 25 males and 1 in every 173 females. The total correctional population in 1989 represented a 9.2-percent increase from 1988 and a 34.6-percent increase since 1985. The probation population increased by 5.6 percent from the previous year, while the parole population increased by 12.1 percent. The probation population was highest in proportion to the general population in the South. Georgia had the highest rate of persons on probation. Overall, more than 80 percent of those released from prison received supervision in the community. Tables
