ARTICLE OFFERS A HISTORICAL AND ANALYTICAL ACCOUNT OF THE GROWTH, DEVELOPMENT, AND DIFFUSION OF PRISONERS' UNIONS IN VARIOUS JURISDICTIONS, AS WELL AS AN EXAMINATION OF PUBLIC ATTITUDES TOWARD PRISONERS' UNIONS.
Abstract
A SUMMARY OF PRISONERS' MOVEMENTS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD IS PRESENTED, ILLUSTRATING ORGANIZATIONAL DIFFERENCES. THE ARTICLE PRESENTS DEMOGRAPHIC DATA THAT WAS GATHERED ON A CRIMINOLOGY-PENOLOGY STUDY TOUR OF SIX EUROPEAN COUNTRIES DURING 1974. AMONG SIGNIFICANT FINDINGS OF THE STUDY, IT WAS NOTED THAT THE MOST SIGNIFICANT PRISONERS' UNION ACTIVITY HAS OCCURRED IN COUNTRIES WITH 'PROGRESSIVE' SOCIAL WELFARE POLICIES AND HIGH LEVELS OF CITIZEN TOLERANCE.
