Words and expressions compiled and defined in this book are based on prison slang that reflects major aspects of prison existence.
Abstract
The words are grouped by topic and are arranged alphabetically under each heading: institutionalization, sentencing, serving time, inmates, associates, communication, sexuality, cigarettes and food, drugs and alcohol, tattoos, violence, security and authority, parole and records, death in prison, and getting out. The words are grouped in this manner to provide continuity of thought and help the reader better understand the content. Because language is not static and prison jargon is no exception, many of the words have counterparts found in past times. When applicable, these words are indicated following the appropriate entry. The authors believe language is a reflection of life. Since words are created and used to express conditions and lifestyles, the book demonstrates the reality of life in prison. An alphabetical listing of all words is presented in an index.
