AN HISTORICAL OVERVIEW OF RECREATION IN CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES INCLUDES A 1909 ARTICLE DESCRIBING THE PHYSICAL, SOCIAL, AND INTELLECTUAL BENEFITS OF PLAY FOR RESIDENTS OF INSTITUTIONS, INCLUDING REFORMATORIES.
Abstract
OTHER SOURCES ARE A PAPER ON THE RECREATION HOURS OF PATROLED INMATES (1921); AN ARTICLE ON PLAY IN CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS (1923); AND A 1934 STUDY OF 84 INSTITUTIONS, INCLUDING JUVENILE REFORMATORIES, FROM 48 STATES. OBSERVATIONS ON THE LACK OF PUBLIC INTEREST IN CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES AND THE LIMITATIONS OF FUNDING, AS WELL AS INTERVIEWS WITH CORRECTIONAL OFFICIALS ARE PRESENTED. ADDITIONAL SOURCES INCLUDE A FLYER ON RECREATION AND INSTITUTIONAL ADMINISTRATION CIRCULATED BY THE NEW JERSEY STATE REFORMATORY IN 1930, A 1937 ARTICLE ON RECREATION AND PRISON POPULATIONS, A 1941 ARTICLE ON THE ROLE OF SPORTS IN PRISONS, AND A 1952 ARTICLE CONTRASTING ALCATRAZ PENITENTIARY WITH TWO MODERN INSTITUTIONS.
