STUDY TO DETERMINE WHETHER THE MAJOR TASK OF A PRISON RECEPTION CENTER WAS ACCOMPLISHED BY MEANS OF DIFFERENT CRITERIA WHEN THE CENTER WAS STAFFED BY MENTAL HEALTH TEAMS RATHER THAN NON-MENTAL HEALTH PERSONNEL.
Abstract
THE DATA FOR THIS ORIGINATED IN A WESTERN STATE RECEPTION CENTER EMPLOYING ONLY MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS. THE MAJOR SOURCE OF INFORMATION WAS THE CASE SUMMARY PREPARED AT THE RECEPTION CENTER. A RESEARCH SCHEDULE PERMITTED CODING OF CASE RECORD INFORMATION FOR COMPUTER PROGRAMMING ANALYSIS. SEVERAL RESEARCH QUESTIONS WERE POSED TO DETERMINE WHETHER CLINICAL TEAM PROGNOSES AND DIAGNOSES HAD MORE THAN AN INCIDENTAL IMPACT ON THE CHANNELING OF RECEPTION CENTER OFFENDERS TO CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES IN A STATEWIDE SYSTEM. THE ROLE OF THE MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONAL WAS FOUND TO BE ONE WHICH MERELY VALIDATED THE USUAL DECISIONS FORMULATED IN CORRECTIONAL SETTINGS BY PERSONNEL IDENTIFIED WITH OTHER OCCUPATIONS AND PROFESSIONS. THIS REPORT INCLUDES SEVERAL RECOMMENDATIONS REGARDING THE USE OF MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS IN THE PRISON RECEPTION CENTER, INCLUDING THE SUGGESTION THAT THE RECEPTION CENTER FUNCTION COULD BE PERFORMED BY THE SUB-PROFESSIONAL CORRECTIONAL WORKER, USING MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS AS CONSULTANTS ON AN AS-NEEDED BASIS. SUGGESTIONS FOR FURTHER RESEARCH IN THIS AREA ARE ALSO MADE. THE APPENDIX CONTAINS THE RESEARCH SCHEDULE USED IN THE STUDY. A TEN-PAGE BIBLIOGRAPHY IS ALSO INCLUDED.
