Abstract
The results from this survey showed that the average prison population, 45,900, rose by 1 percent over 1990; the average population in police cells was 1,100, which was considerably higher than the previous two years. The remand population rose from 9,700-9,900 in the period between January and April to 10,500- 10,700 between September and December; these figures reflect an increase in the cases in custody awaiting trial at the Crown Court. The number of sentenced offenders rose from 34,800 in 1990 to 35,900 in 1991. Finally, the total number of sentenced receptions in 1991 was about 3 percent higher than in 1990; this increase occurred mainly in the shorter sentences and contrasts with significant falls in receptions in 1989 and 1990. 7 figures, 7 tables, and 10 notes
