THIS REPORT PRESENTS DATA ON THE 40,885 MEN AND 1,434 WOMEN IN BRITISH PRISONS ON JUNE 30, 1978.
Abstract
OF THE TOTAL PRISON POPULATION, 3,909 WERE AWAITING TRIAL AND ANOTHER 2,212 WERE CONVICTED BUT UNSENTENCED. THERE WERE 170 INMATES WHO WERE IN PRISON FOR NOT OBEYING A COURT ORDER, WHILE 186 WERE BEING HELD UNDER THE 1971 IMMIGRATION ACT AND 924 WERE IMPRISONED FOR FAILING TO PAY A FINE WITHOUT RECEIVING IMMEDIATE CUSTODIAL RELEASE. INMATES UNDER 21 MADE UP NEARLY 1/4 OF THE POPULATION WITH 5,381 SENTENCED TO BORSTAL TRAINING, 2,040 MALES IN DETENTION CENTERS, AND 2,780 IN PRISON. OF THE SENTENCES BEING SERVED, 45 PERCENT WERE FOR 18 MONTHS OR LESS, WHILE 4,066 PRISONERS WERE SERVING OVER 5 YEARS. THERE WERE 2,444 INMATES IN REMAND CENTERS, MAINLY THOSE UNDER 21 AWAITING TRIAL OR SENTENCE; 16,871 WERE IN LOCAL PRISONS; 3,492 WERE IN OPEN TRAINING PRISONS (WITHOUT WALLS OR FENCES); AND 11,712 WERE IN CLOSED TRAINING PRISONS. VIOLENCE AGAINST PERSONS INCLUDED 1,090 MURDERS, 664 OTHER HOMICIDES OR ATTEMPTED HOMICIDES, 3,631 WOUNDINGS, 522 ASSAULTS, 23 CASES OF CRUELTY TO CHILDREN, AND 578 OTHER VIOLENT ACTS. SEXUAL OFFENSES INCLUDED 293 CASES OF BUGGERY AND INDECENCY BETWEEN MALES, 577 RAPES, 122 CASES OF GROSS INDECENCY WITH CHILDREN, AND 701 OTHERS. THERE WERE 10,352 BURGLARS, 2,361 ROBBERS, 47 MOTOR VEHICLE THEIFS, 1,313 PERPETRATORS OF FRAUD, 170 FORGERS, 328 ARSONISTS, 772 DRUG OFFENDERS, 136 DRIVERS UNDER THE INFLUENCE, 124 DRUNKS, AND 74 PROSTITUTION OFFENDERS. ALMOST HALF OF THESE PRISONERS HAD FIVE PREVIOUS CONVICTIONS. TABLES ARE INCLUDED.
