Abstract
This report from the Washington State Institute for Public Policy identifies evidence-based options that can be used by law enforcement to reduce crime and save money. The research for this report was done at the request of the Washington State legislature and the findings apply only to the State of Washington. The research identified policies and programs that can be used to reduce crime and control costs. These policies and programs include correctional interventions for adult offenders, alternative prison sentencing policies, more effective use of police resources by adding officers and deploying them to "hot spots" or deploying them with routine practices, the use of correctional interventions for juvenile offenders, and the use of two early childhood programs that have been proven to have a direct effect on preventing crime by improving education outcomes for children and reducing the incidence of child abuse. These policies and programs were identified using a three-step process: identifying what works and what doesn't; conducting a cost/benefit analysis; and conducting a risk analysis based on the cost/benefit findings.
