Abstract
TWO PROBLEMS ARE DISCUSSED. THE FIRST IS AN EXAMINATION OF THE PRISON SYSTEM AS A COMPLEX ORGANIZATION. THE SECOND CONCENTRATES ON THE NATURE OF INMATE SOCIETY OR INMATE SUBCULTURE THAT DEVELOPS WITHIN THE PRISON. THE ARTICLE ALSO DISCUSSES THE EXTENT TO WHICH ASSIMILATION INTO THE INMATE SOCIETY INFLUENCES BOTH PRISON ADAPTATIONS AND POSTPRISON ADJUSTMENTS IN THE LARGER SOCIETY. ALSO COVERED ARE THE CONSEQUENCES OF CONFINEMENT....BDS
