This report describes and presents statistics on the Swedish prison and probation system during 1979.
Abstract
Sweden provides for the following types of sanctions: fines, conditional sentence, probation, imprisonment, and committal for special forms of treatment. Courts are required to carefully consider individual and general prevention; preference is given to measures which avoid deprivation of liberty. If imprisonment is necessary, it should be organized in such a way as to keep the offender in close contact with society (i.e., by sending or eventually transferring offenders to small community-based institutions). There is a policy of paid full-time employment. Many institutions have educational and vocational programs. The report includes information on corrections administration and organization and presents data on sentencing, furloughs, noninstitutional treatment, and recidivism.
