This document presents background information and resource materials for use in drug prevention programs that target Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans.
Abstract
The information reflects findings from major government reports and research studies on alcohol and other drug use in the Asian and Pacific Islander community. The text notes that the term "Asian Americans" encompasses a diverse population that now includes 5 million people in the United States. Although Asian Americans drink less alcohol and have fewer alcohol-related problems than any other major ethnic group in the United States, alcohol and other drug use may be increasing among some Asian Americans. Prevention programs could effectively draw upon traditional Asian norms to keep young people from using alcohol and other drugs and should try to reduce the stigma that Asian Americans attach to seeking help. Another preventive measure would be to provide adequate support and alternative ways to deal with the acculturation problems experienced by recent Asian immigrants.
