Recent national survey data indicate that over 81 percent of male and female school students have experienced sexual harassment, more often at the hands of peers than adults.
Abstract
The Intercultural Development Research Association (IRDA) helped a school district in Texas develop a comprehensive approach to raise awareness about peer-to-peer sexual harassment. An eight- step comprehensive approach was developed, which included convening a meeting of core individuals including the district's Title IX coordinators, principals, nurses, and counselors; providing an overview of sexual harassment to elementary and secondary school principals; providing a community awareness meeting to learn about the district's plan to prevent sexual harassment in schools; creating an introductory videotape for secondary students; providing four days of training to selected representatives from the district schools; providing a session for vice-principals and facilitators; including a training session for counselors, nurses, and social workers; and including follow-up activities by IRDA's gender equity coordinator. 2 references
