THE PHYSICAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL, EDUCATIONAL, AND BACKGROUND REQUIREMENTS FOR ENTRY INTO POLICE SERVICE ARE DISCUSSED, AND MINIMUM TRAINING REQUIREMENTS FOR MODERN POLICE OFFICERS ARE LISTED.
Abstract
MUCH MORE IS REQUIRED OF TODAY'S POLICEMAN THAN THE OFFICER OF FIFTY YEARS AGO. CHANGES IN THE POLICE ROLE AND IN THE PUBLIC'S DEMANDS ON POLICE HAVE FORCED MORE STRINGENT REQUIREMENTS FOR POLICE JOB ENTRY. THE TYPES OF PREREQUISITES NOW REQUIRED BY MOST POLICE AGENCIES ARE REVIEWED. THESE INCLUDE A MINIMUM OF A HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION, HIGH LEVEL OF PHYSICAL FITNESS AND HEALTH, A SOUND PSYCHOLOGICAL MAKEUP, AND A MORAL AND HONEST BACKGROUND. THE AUTHOR OUTLINES A MULTI-LEVEL PLAN FOR POLICE JOB ADVANCEMENT WHICH WOULD TAKE INTO ACCOUNT POLICE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE. BASIC POLICE TRAINING REQUIREMENTS FOR POLICE ARE OUTLINED, AND NEW TECHNIQUES WHICH HAVE BEEN UTILIZED SUCCESSFULLY IN POLICE TRAINING ARE DESCRIBED.
