This book is designed to help families become stronger, closer, and happier, thus providing the context for helping children reduce their risk for using drugs.
Abstract
"Families" for whom this book is intended encompass any group of people living together and depending on one another for emotional, financial, or social support. The chapters explain how to prevent drug abuse in your family, how to develop a family position on drugs, how to say "No" to drugs, the expression and control of anger, the strengthening of family bonds, and how to organize a parent support group. Each of the chapters discusses a topic that is important in reducing the risk of adolescent drug abuse and contains a step-by-step procedure to help reduce the risks of your own child developing a drug problem. Each chapter also contains an agenda for holding a family meeting and describes other family activities that relate to the topic being discussed. Tear-out "familygrams" are included in each chapter for use as reminders of the behaviors and attitudes being learned. Appendixes contain a behavioral checklist for children using drugs, a chart that categorizes federally controlled substances by how they are used and how they affect the user, and a list of organizations that can provide additional information on drug use.
