This report presents the results of the 1994 Adult Corrections Survey research project.
Abstract
All State adult correctional institutions were included in the sample frame. The usable sample consisted of 290 respondents. This is over one-third of all such institutions in the sample universe. The sample includes responses from 47 States. The report describes the research methodology; it involved a short time frame from data collection to providing this preliminary report. The descriptive statistical findings are reported for all quantitative variables in the survey. Although the project focused on prison gangs, a number of other issues were discussed and examined as they affect adult State correctional institutions in the United States. A more detailed discussion and analysis was also undertaken and reported on addressing the issue of estimating the scope of the "gang problem" in American adult State correctional institutions; however, the analysis also focuses on other contemporary issues of concern to the corrections profession. The survey collected data and information on some 82 variables. Recommendations for future research are offered, along with suggestions for improving the focus of gang analysis. 11 tables
