Annotation
The nine essays in this volume develop and use a new mode of analyzing punishment and penal control. They explore both the social and political significance of penal sanctions and their relationship to power, the social structure, and social change.
Abstract
Analyses range through the theoretical work of Foucault and Durkheim; discussions of social control; decarceration, the state, and penal policy; ''hidden discipline;' and contemporary penality and penal politics. The volume draws together key themes of contemporary theory to formulate a conceptual basis for both theory and practice. Particularly, it places the study of penality within sociopolitical discourse and shows the significance of penal issues for contemporary political action. The book is intended as a text for those working and studying in sociology, criminology, sociolegal areas, social work, social administration, and law. Chapter notes, 340 references, and a subject index. For individual essays, see NCJ 100558-59. (Publisher abstract modified)
