WALKER METHOD OF DEVELOPING THE PATTERN OF DISTRIBUTION OF NITRITE PARTICLES AROUND A BULLET HOLE IS DISCUSSED, AND A NEW METHOD IS SUGGESTED.
Abstract
THE WALKER METHOD CONSISTS IN TRANSFERRING NITRITE PARTICLES IMBEDDED ON AN OBJECT TO A FRESHLY PREPARED PAPER CONTAINING A MIXTURE OF SULPHANIC ACID AND NAPHTHYLAMINE. WHERE NITRITE PARTICLES ARE PRESENT, A PATTERN OF ORANGE-RED SPECKS IS PRODUCED. IN THE PROPOSED METHOD PARANITROANILINE REPLACES SULPHURIC ACID, AND NAPHTHOL IS SUBSTITUTED FOR NAPHTHYLAMINE. BLUE SPECKS ALLOW THE PATTERN TO BE DISTINGUISHED MORE EASILY IN A BLOOD STAINED ARTICLE. ALSO, THIS LATTER PROCESS DOES NOT REQUIRE FRESHLY PREPARED PAPERS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
