The Post 900 program implemented in 1976 by the Exploring Division of the Robert E. Lee Council in Henrico County, Va., is described. It aims to improve social and communication skills of juveniles who have come to the attention of the courts.
Abstract
The program serves 18 participants at any given time. Participants outline specific behaviors needing improvement. Post members successfully complete the program by earning 900 behavior and activity points for 3 out of 4 of the stated objectives. Participants are 14 to 16 years old, in need of constructive outlets for interests, and have a brief history of delinquency. Referrals may come to the advisor from the intake, investigation, probation, or aftercare units of the courts; from the Court Alternative Program; or from the community. An Adult Advisory Committee composed of juvenile probation officers employed by the Henrico Probation Department provides support and guidance to the post, reviewing program members' progress and approving personal projects as outlined in the point system. Planned activities are to be mentally and physically vigorous, incorporating group counseling methods and confrontations relating to post members' objectives. Points are awarded to members for attendance at regularly scheduled business meetings, punctuality, participation in activities, terms as officers or committee membership, and personal projects. Participants may continue or terminate participation upon earning 900 points. Program participation may lead to destruction of criminal records or to termination of probationary supervision.
