DEFINES THE JUVENILE PROBATION WORKER'S TASK OF SOCIAL REHABILITATIVE THERAPY AS WELL AS SOME OF THE FACTORS WHICH LIMIT ITS SUCCESS BASED ON EXPERIENCES IN THE WEST GERMAN PROBATION SERVICE.
Abstract
THE PROBATION WORKER IS AUTHORIZED TO STIPULATE CONDITIONS AND ARRANGEMENTS IN THE JUVENILE'S LIFE WHILE HE IS ON PROBATION. IN DEVISING APPROPRIATE CONDITIONS TOGETHER WITH HIS CLIENT, THE PROBATION WORKER HAS AN OPPORTUNITY TO ENGAGE THE CLIENT IN A JOINT EFFORT TO ACHIEVE PATTERNS OF ACCEPTABLE AND ADAPTIVE BEHAVIOR. IT IS OF PRIME IMPORTANCE THAT THE PROBATION WORKER IS OPEN IN HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH THE CLIENT. A SERIOUS LIMITATION TO THIS RELATIONSHIP IS AN OVERBURDENED CASE LOAD. SOME WEST GERMAN WORKERS HAVE HAD CASELOADS OF UP TO 80 CLIENTS. PRESENTED ARE CASE HISTORIES OF SUCCESSFUL AND UNSUCCESSFUL SOCIAL THERAPY WHILE ON PROBATION. ALSO PRESENTED ARE FOUR CATEGORIES OF OFFENDER TYPOLOGY RANKED IN ORDER OF THEIR RESPONSIVENESS TO REHABILITATIVE THERAPY. --IN GERMAN
