A police chief makes recommendations for building a positive organizational culture.
Abstract
By building a positive organizational culture, police managers may foster committed employees with high morale, and in turn, enhanced departmental performance and citizen satisfaction. This entails combining the core principles of several leadership techniques and tailoring them to suit a police environment. Police administrators can practically guarantee acceptable employee performance by using a process called PRICE--pinpoint, record, involve, coach, and evaluate. In the process, supervisors and employees cooperate in defining problems, and documenting progress made toward eradicating them. Managers should use a system such as Total Quality Management (TQM) to motivate employees. TQM is based on principles of customer satisfaction, positive motivation, and teamwork. Managers may focus on individuals who show particular signs of untapped potentialities. Properly motivated, or empowered, employees invest themselves in their work and welcome responsibility. 5 endnotes
