The movement of criminally sentenced offenders under the custody of the Massachusetts Department of Corrections in 1989 are summarized. Trends in population movement during the period between 1984 and 1988 are discussed, particularly in relation to prison population growth.
Abstract
During 1989, there were 20,258 admissions and 19,437 releases of all types to departmental facilities, leading to agency population growth. In 1989, admissions to the department included 3,858 court commitments (including from and after), 1,185 parole and probation violators, and 458 county transfers. Releases in 1989 included 1,933 paroles to street, 1,560 discharges to street, 892 transfers to county jails, and 146 expirations of sentence to street. Other types of releases included hospital transfers, transfers to houses of corrections, and movements to institutions in other States.
