On February 22, 1990, a strong concern about the increasing supply, demand, production, and distribution of drugs prompted the United Nations General Assembly to agree that a more global approach needed to be adopted by all nations in an effort to foster international cooperation in the war on drugs.
Abstract
Essential measures must be taken in the field of educating and informing the public both at the local and international level through campaigns organized by United Nations agencies such as UNESCO, UNICEF, UNDP, and WHO. Financial and technical assistance should be provided to help developing countries eradicate crops involved in the production of illicit drugs and strengthen the infrastructure for prevention of drug traffic to eliminate the violence, terrorism, and fatal diseases such as AIDS that are by-products of illicit drug traffic and abuse. Measures must be taken to prevent drugs from crossing borders through careful surveillance of access roads, and steps must be taken to prevent banks and other financial institutions from processing and laundering drug-related money by means of strengthened judicial, legal, and law-enforcement systems.
