This paper describes the philosophy, facilities, and operations of the Dr. Henri van der Hoeven Kliniek in Utrecht, Netherlands, which is a psychiatric hospital for patients whose illnesses and disorders have been manifested in behavior dangerous to others.
Abstract
The clinic was established in 1955 as a forensic psychiatric facility. Clinic services are for people sentenced to unconditional detention in a hospital, for inmates who can best be managed in a psychiatric hospital, and for other psychiatric patients who have appeared in a criminal court. The clinic accommodates approximately 90 patients. Nearly all the patients have caused others serious harm with their crimes, but the court has not held them criminally responsible because of a psychiatric disorder. The clinic provides both individual and group therapy. Involvement of family, marital partners, and friends in treatment sometimes results in a type of psychotherapy. Clinic staff and programs encourage patients to develop behaviors that will permit them to live in society independently or with appropriate support services. 17 notes
