This report presents the number of police personnel in England and Wales as of September 30, 2013.
Abstract
There were 132,235 police officers (full-time equivalents) in England and Wales on September 30, 2012. This includes 131,837 officers in the 43 police forces of England and Wales and 398 officers seconded to central services. An additional 2,650 officers compose the British Transport Police. The number of officers for these 43 force have decreased by 4,001 (2.9 percent) compared to September 2011 and by 2,262 (1.7 percent) compared with March 2012). This is the lowest number of police officers recorded since 2002. Police staff for the 43 forces are 65,992 (full-time equivalents), a decrease of 3,406 (4.9 percent) compared with September 2011, and a decrease of 1,544 (2.3 percent) compared with March 2012. There were 14,411 full-time equivalent police community support officers in the 43 forces on September 30, 2012, a decline of 6.9 percent since September 2011, and 0.1-percent increase since March 2012. There were 30 full-time traffic wardens in the 43 forces as of the end of September 2012, a decline of 153 since September 2011, and decrease of 6 since March 2012. Almost all traffic wardens are now employed by local authorities. In addition, there were 19,159 special constables in the 43 forces, a 1.3-percent decrease since September 2011 and a 5.9-percent decrease since March 2012. 1 figure, 6 tables, and 13 notes
