Abstract
'POLICE SERGEANT'S MANUAL' IS DESIGNED ESPECIALLY FOR PROGRESSIVE POLICE OFFICERS. IT IS INTENDED TO GIVE SUCH OFFICERS AN INSIGHT INTO THE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THEIR SUPERIORS SO THEY MAY LAY THE GROUNDWORK FOR THEIR OWN PROMOTION. IN THIS RESPECT, IT IS PARTICULARLY VALUABLE FOR THE PATROLMAN, SINCE THE PROBLEMS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE SERGEANT ARE DISCUSSED IN DETAIL. THE FIRST PART OF THE BOOK OFFERS EXTENSIVE COVERAGE OF BOTH EXAMINATION PREPARATION AND TACTICS FOR TAKING POLICE EXAMINATIONS. A SAMPLING OF CURRENT QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS FOR POLICE PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATIONS THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES IS INCLUDED. PART TWO GIVES THE SUPERVISOR AN OVERVIEW OF POLICE ORGANIZATION AND MANAGEMENT WHICH ILLUSTRATES HIS ROLE IN RELATION TO THE OVERALL OPERATION OF THE DEPARTMENT. THE LAST SECTION PRESENTS THE ESSENTIAL PRINCIPLES OF HANDLING POLICE PERSONNEL AND THE BASIC DUTIES OF SUPERVISORY OFFICERS. ASPECTS OF SUPERVISION COVERED INCLUDE - INTERPERSONAL RELATIONS, LEADERSHIP, BUILDING MORALE, DISCIPLINE, PLANNING, INSPECTION AND EVALUATION, AND THE TRAINING FUNCTION OF THE POLICE SERGEANT. ALTHOUGH THE DUTIES DISCUSSED ARE BASED ON THOSE FOR OFFICERS OF POLICE DEPARTMENTS IN CITIES WITH POPULATIONS RANGING FROM 100,000 TO 200,000, THE PRINCIPLES DISCUSSED APPLY EQUALLY TO SUPERVISION IN ANY SIZE DEPARTMENT. MATERIALS FOR CIVIL SERVICE PREPARATION AND A LAW ENFORCEMENT BIBLIOGRAPHY ARE INCLUDED IN THE APPENDIX. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED). (SNI ABSTRACT)
