This curriculum guide is intended to help prepare police personnel to respond to seizures caused by epilepsy, diabetes, or other problems in any setting.
Abstract
The manual was developed as part of a larger educational project designed to promote compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Noting that more than 2 million people in the United States have epilepsy, the curriculum aims to enhance police officers' understanding of the nature and causes of seizures and how disturbances in brain function affect consciousness and behavior. It also teaches techniques and procedures needed to handle seizure- related calls more effectively and to recognize distinctive features that indicate that seizures are taking place. The curriculum is intended to offer flexibility to trainers. It outlines sessions of varying lengths, includes materials that may be photocopied, and suggests books, videotapes, and other resources. Appended tests, questions and answers, illustration, chart on seizure recognition and management, and related materials
