This article describes program responses in New York City; Dearborn, Michigan; Maryland; Dallas, Texas; and Tacoma, Washington to a National Institute of Justice-sponsored study which suggests that private security resources can contribute to cooperative, community-based crime prevention and security awareness programs.
Abstract
"Crime and Protection in America: A Study of Private Security and Law Enforcement Resources and Relationships" recommends that police and private security share crime prevention materials, specialized security equipment, expertise, and personnel. New York City's Area Police-Private Security Liaison Program links police precincts with 30 propriety security organizations in a structured anti-crime effort. Dearborn, Michigan's Security Network brings together 106 representatives from 50 businesses and 8 members of the Dearborn Police Department to discuss combined approaches to current security issues. Three Maryland pilot programs include networking crime prevention information, training of private security personnel in courtroom testimony, interactive crisis management planning, and the sharing of parking violation enforcement. Operational since October 1983, the Dallas Police/Private Security Joint Information Committee meets monthly to evaluate current measures and develop new initiatives. In Tacoma, private security guards assist police patrolling efforts and a public relations campaign to advertise the revitalized downtown area.
