RESULTS OF A SURVEY WHICH ASSESSED THE ATTITUDES AND BELIEFS OF 202 POLICE OFFICERS TOWARD THE CONCEPT OF POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATIONS PRIOR TO THEIR INVOLVEMENT IN A POLIC-COMMUNITY RELATIONS TRAINING PROGRAM.
Abstract
OVERALL, THE RESULTS OF THE SURVEY SHOWED A FAVORABLE ATTITUDE TOWARD POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATIONS. FOR EXAMPLE, 94 PERCENT OF THE OFFICERS FELT THAT IT WAS IMPORTANT FOR AN OFFICER TO MEET REGULARLY WITH CITIZENS AND NIEGHBORHOOD GROUPS, WHILE 96 PERCENT AGREED THAT SOMETHING SHOULD BE DONE TO IMPROVE RELATIONS BETWEEN THE POLICE AND THE PUBLIC. THE OFFICERS ALSO EVIDENCED A CLEAR INDICATION THAT THEY WERE WILLING TO ASSUME AN ACTIVE ROLE IN THE TASK OF IMPROVING POLICE-PUBLIC INTERACTION. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
