Prepared for individuals interested in qualifying as police officers, this self-help guide provides an overview of police work and then teaches techniques for taking multiple-choice tests successfully, using sample exams and additional questions taken from actual police tests.
Abstract
A general description of a police officer's work covers responsibilities, training, employment outlook, earnings, and working conditions. A review of the application process begins by identifying data that can be extracted from a job announcement and then offers suggestions for completing the application form. Guidelines for efficient study and taking an exam are presented. Primarily, the manual presents samples of multiple-choice tests for practice and for determining weak points. Practice exams include a facsimile of the latest police officer exam, a previous examination for police officers, and two other tests. Exam questions test applicants' judgment, reasoning ability, ability to form decisions, memory aptitude, and reading comprehension. Areas addressed include traffic accident management, criminal investigation, crime and social problems, evidence in investigations, and criminology. Since some jurisdictions still use general testing, practice vocabularly and mathematical computation questions are also provided.
