Abstract
The KwaZulu Police Force gradually developed into a national police force performing policing functions in KwaZulu. The force has a paramilitary structure and has an active and expanding reservist force. Police functions include crime investigation, traffic management and enforcement, and crime prevention. A survey of 677 residents of KwaMashu and Umlazi focused on their involvement in crime prevention efforts. Less than one-tenth of the respondents have participated in organized community crime prevention. A larger percentage have undertaken individual preventive measures. Approximately nine-tenths of the respondents favor police giving crime-prevention guidance to the public. The KwaZulu police currently liase with schools, community leaders, and others to educate the public on police functions and crime prevention. KwaZulu police officers undergo basic and inservice training. The training wing of the Police College has the following sections: police administration, criminal investigation, and law subjects; first aid; drill; physical training; and good citizenship. 4 tables and 25 references
