A REPORT ON A PROJECT THAT ATTEMPTS TO PROVIDE IMPROVED SERVICES FOR MENTALLY DEFICIENT PROBATIONERS BY IDENTIFYING THEM, PROVIDING SPECIAL TRAINING FOR POLICE AND PROBATION OFFICERS, AND BY INDIVIDUAL CASE HANDLING.
Abstract
MENTALLY DEFICIENT PROBATIONERS WERE IDENTIFIED WITH THE USE OF A TEN-QUESTION TEST DESIGNED TO INDICATE THE POSSIBILITY OF MENTAL DEFICIENCY WHICH WAS ADMINISTERED TO ALL NEWLY ASSIGNED PROBATIONERS. A TWO-DAY TRAINING PROGRAM WAS PRESENTED TO MEMBERS OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE COMMUNITY IN PIMA COUNTY. PROBATIONERS THUS IDENTIFIED WERE ASSIGNED TO CASEWORK CATEGORIES OF DIFFERING LEVELS OF SUPERVISION. AS CLIENTS RESPONDED, THEY WERE GIVEN LESS AND LESS SUPERVISION. PROGRAM GOALS WERE TO REDUCE RECIDIVISM, TO HELP CLIENTS ADAPT TO THEIR COMMUNITIES, AND TO HELP CLIENTS TO DEVELOP THEIR POTENTIAL IN ECONOMIC, EMOTIONAL, EDUCATIONAL, AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT. STATISTICS ARE PROVIDED ON CLIENT DEMOGRAPHY AND GOAL ATTAINMENT.
