This pictorial history of crime looks at the development of police methods to cope with an expanding range of crimes. Famous criminal cases in the United States and internationally during the last 150 years are discussed.
Abstract
The cases illustrate how the police in various countries investigated and apprehended major criminals in the early 19th century. The cases also show how police techniques improved, how science in the form of laboratories and fingerprinting was introduced, how international cooperation among police agencies developed, and how computer technology entered the police scene. The book covers cases involving murder and corruption, gangs and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, police methods, punishment versus treatment issues, organized crime, sex offenders, and kidnaping.
