Abstract
A SECONDARY FUNCTION OF INTAKE IS TO INTERVIEW CERTAIN CATEGORIES OF INMATES WHO ARE ELIGIBLE FOR PAROLE HEARINGS AND PROVIDE SENTENCING JUDGES WITH BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON THE INMATE AND HIS/HER PLANS IF RELEASED ON PAROLE. THIS EVALUATION COVERS THE THIRD YEAR OF OPERATION OF THIS PROGRAM. PROJECT BACKGROUND AND HISTORY ARE REVIEWED ALONG WITH CASE PROCESSING ACTIVITIES. PROGRAM EVALUATION WAS BASED ON PROJECT RECORDS, ON-SITE OBSERVATIONS, AND STAFF AND CLIENT INTERVIEWS. PROGRAM CHANGES IMPLEMENTED DURING THIS LAST YEAR - PROCESSING OF ALL CASES RECEIVING PROBATION SENTENCES; REDUCING THE TIME BETWEEN INTAKE AND FIELD INTERVIEWS FROM THREE WEEKS TO ONE WEEK; AND CLIENT ORIENTATION REGARDING PROBATION SERVICES AND REGULATIONS - ARE INDIVIDUALLY DISCUSSED AND EVALUATED. THE PROJECT WAS FOUND TO BE PROCESSING ALL CASES REFERRED, SCHEDULING FIELD INTERVIEWS FOR 71.6 PER CENT OF ITS CLIENTS WITHIN FIVE WORKING DAYS, AND EFFECTUATING CLIENT ORIENTATION IN 'VIRTUALLY EVERY CASE.' IN ADDITION, THE MAJORITY OF FIELD STAFF INTERVIEWED FOUND THE PROBATION INTAKE AND PRE-PAROLE REPORTS HELPFUL. IT WAS RECOMMENDED THAT REGULAR SYSTEMS OF COMMUNICATION AND FEEDBACK BETWEEN THE INTAKE UNIT AND OTHER AGENCIES AND DEPARTMENTS. THE APPENDIX CONTAINS COPIES OF THE PROBATION INTAKE AND PRE-PAROLE FORMS.
