Recent police research is summarized that deals with community crime prevention programs, community involvement in community policing, police officer deaths, and biological limits on police handgun shooting accuracy.
Abstract
The first essay addresses some of the difficulties in community crime prevention. One difficulty involves mobilizing community support; another problem is that well-organized communities with lower crime rates may not need community crime prevention programs. The second essay discusses barriers to community involvement in community policing, noting difficulties encountered by the Bureau of Justice Assistance in its community policing initiatives for drug demand reduction. The third essay analyzes the deaths of 103 law enforcement officers in Dade County, Florida, between 1895 and 1993. The fourth essay considers the shooting accuracy of police officers and explains how biomechanical and neurophysiological factors affect shooting accuracy in combat situations.
