This report presents quarterly statistics on the numbers and rates of juveniles in Australia's corrective institutions from the March quarter of 1981 until the June quarter of 1998, based on data provided by the juvenile justice authorities in the States and Territories.
Abstract
Given the difference among jurisdictions regarding the definition of a juvenile, statistics were published for individuals between 10 and 17 years old. One table, however, provided data on the number of persons detained in juvenile corrective institutions who were aged 18 years and over, and another table provided data on the total number of persons detained in these types of institutions irrespective of age. Data showed that for all jurisdictions, the number of males aged 10-17 in juvenile corrective institutions on June 30, 1981 was 1,119. On June 30, 2000, the number was 604. The rate of incarceration per 100,000 of the relevant population for 1981 was 105.22, and for 2000, it was 55.29. For females, the number of persons aged 10-17 housed in Australian juvenile corrective institutions for 1981 was 233, compared to 67 in 2000. The rate of incarceration for females in 1981 was 22.88 in 1981 and 6.44 in 2000. Extensive tabular and graphic data
