Abstract
The document identifies 27 persons serving juvenile death sentences as of February 1, 1989, or 1.2 percent of the total number of individuals currently serving death sentences. For each of the years 1982 to 1988, juvenile death sentences have comprised 1 to 2 percent of the total number of death sentences each year. Of the 25 male and 2 female juveniles now on death row, 14 are black, 2 are Hispanic and 11 are white. The document provides a brief history of juvenile executions, analyzes current litigation involving the constitutionality of the juvenile death penalty, and provides brief summaries of the cases of each of the 27 individuals currently serving juvenile death sentences.
