STUDY ASSESSING PERSONALITY TRAITS OF LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS, THEIR ATTITUDES TOWARD THEIR JOBS, AND TOWARD PEOPLE IN GENERAL.
Abstract
THREE PSYCHOLOGICAL AND ATTITUDINAL SCALES ADMINISTERED TO THIRTY POLICE OFFICERS ATTENDING THE LAW ENFORCEMENT ACADEMY AT DONELSON, TENNESSEE. SHOWED THAT THIS GROUP OF POLICE OFFICERS WAS AVERAGE IN TERMS OF PERSONALITY CHARACTERISTICS AND SLIGHTY ABOVE THE RANGE OF AVERAGE INTELLIGENCE. THEIR ATTITUDES TOWARD THEIR FELLOW MEN WERE MODERATE. THEY WERE POSITIVELY ORIENTED TOWARD THE LAW ENFORCEMENT FIELD AND THE PEOPLE IN THE FIELD. THERE WAS A POSITIVE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN INTELLIGENCE AND MATURITY AND VALUATION OF LAW ENFORCEMENT FUNCTION AND PEOPLE. THESE CONCLUSIONS ARE BASED ONLY ON STUDY OF OFFICERS ATTENDING THE ACADEMY AND ONLY THOSE WHO VOLUNTEERED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
