Police agencies must ensure that the best respiratory protection equipment is available for police work, because police personnel are at risk of respiratory injury from inhaling toxic dust, fumes, gases, and vapors during their work.
Abstract
In situations as diverse as a drug laboratory clean out, perimeter control of hazardous material spill sites, first response emergency rescue, preliminary investigation at suspicious sites, or riot response, law enforcement officers can be exposed to bacterially infected and polluted air or toxic gases and vapors. Personal injuries and disabilities resulting from occupational hazards are also costly. Therefore, preventing personal injury and reducing occupational hazards are essential elements in law enforcement. The self-contained breathing apparatus typically worn by firefighters is bulky. However, a Maryland firm has developed a lightweight and portable breathing apparatus called SCBAG. In a few simple steps, the SCBAG quickly transforms into a self-contained breathing apparatus with a vest-type harness. The unit includes high-pressure cylinders containing a 15-minute or 30-minute supply of breathing air. Another useful device is a disposable respirator or face mask, which filters out particulates, to protect against tuberculosis. Information on this personal respiratory protection equipment is available from Racal Health and Safety, Inc. in Frederick, Maryland. Photographs
