EFFECTIVENESS OF A PROGRAM USING POLICE PATROL CARS FOR OFF-DUTY TRAVEL, IN AN ATTEMPT TO CURB CRIME IN PRINCE GEORGES COUNTY, MARYLAND.
Abstract
DISCUSSED IN THIS REPORT ARE 'SUCH FACETS AS THE FACTORS PRIOR TO IMPLEMENTATION, THE POLICY AND PROCEDURES NECESSARY TO IMPLEMENT THE PROGRAM, AND AN ANALYSIS OF THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAM.' IN ADDITION TO DETERRING CRIME, THE PRINCE GEORGES POLICE HOPED TO PROVIDE QUICKER RESPONSE TIME TO CALLS, TO IMPROVE POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATIONS, AND TO REDUCE THE COST OF VEHICLE MAINTENANCE. THE REPORT DISCUSSES SOME ASPECTS OF A SIMILAR PILOT-STUDY FOR NON-PATROL UNITS. THIS PROGRAM HAS BEEN CREDITED WITH REDUCING THE GROWING RATE OF CRIME IN THE COUNTY AND PROVIDING, WITH LITTLE COST TO THE TAXPAYER, ADDITIONAL POLICE PRESENCE ON THE STREETS.
