The Canadian Urban Victimization Survey was replicated in 1985 in the city of Edmonton, Alberta, where property crimes were found to decrease between 1981 and 1984.
Abstract
The survey gathered information from a random sample of 9,200 Edmonton residents 16 years of age or older. They answered questions about their perceptions of crime and the criminal justice system, their experiences with certain crimes during 1984, and the impact that criminal victimization has had on them. Results showed that indicators of risk measured by the survey were remarkably stable. In addition, the differences between the city center and surrounding suburbs in terms of marital, employment, and income characteristics did not result in significantly different property crime rates. Results support the continuation of traditional strategies of target hardening and indicate the need to help victims develop crime prevention and coping strategies.
