THIS POLICE TRAINING MANUAL EXCERPT EXAMINES METHODS THAT ARE BEING USED SUCCESSFULLY BY POLICE AGENCIES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY TO INCREASE PATROL EFFICIENCY.
Abstract
EVERY POLICE DEPARTMENT, REGARDLESS OF SIZE OR JURISDICTIONAL NATURE, CAN TAKE STEPS TO INCREASE THE EFFICIENCY OF ITS PATROL FORCE. CAREFUL ANALYSES OF LOCAL NEEDS AND RESOURCES MUST BE MADE IN ORDER TO DETERMINE PARTICULAR PATROL OBJECTIVES AND TECHNIQUES. MANY AGENCIES ARE MOVING AWAY FROM RANDOM PATROL TECHNIQUES AND ARE BEGINNING TO EXPERIMENT WITH VARIOUS STRUCTURED PATROL SYSTEMS BASED ON CRIME ANALYSIS, COMPLEX DEPLOYMENT TACTICS, AND PRIORITIZATION OF RESPONSES TO CALLS FOR ASSISTANCE. ALTHOUGH THE EXACT EXTENT TO WHICH SUCH TECHNIQUES INCREASE PATROL PRODUCTIVITY HAS NOT BEEN DETERMINED AS YET, PRELIMINARY INDICATIONS SUGGEST THAT USE OF THE STRUCTURED PATROL CONCEPT WILL BE BENEFICIAL TO MOST AGENCIES.
