Abstract
The articles originally appeared in newsletters published between 1995 and 1998. An overview of police partnerships with other organizations notes that the first steps in developing a partnership are to have a clear purpose, to determine the specific issue, and to identify potential allies. The next step is to address the problems that can be solved right away or the most easily so that participants will recognize that progress is occurring. Additional articles focus on efforts to address street drinking in Portland, methods for overcoming the most significant barriers to forming effective partnerships, the steps in forming solution-driven partnerships, and the role of the community in community policing. Other articles discus the formation of community councils by the Broward Sheriff’s Office in Florida; a Los Angeles program that includes law enforcement, city environmental services staff, and social workers to address issues related to homeless people; and a project in a high-crime multifamily housing project in Colorado. Further articles explain the enhancement of community prosecution through partnerships between police agencies and prosecutors’ offices, police-business cooperation in metropolitan Atlanta, an Illinois education and outreach program that targets the Hispanic community, and a resource center for rural areas.
