The National Center on Child Abuse and Neglect (NCCAN) and the National Committee for Prevention of Child Abuse (NCPCA) designed this resource packet to assist communities in promoting National Child Abuse Prevention Month (April 1993).
Abstract
The materials encourage the use of "Partners for Prevention" as the overall theme. This is to emphasize that the prevention of child abuse is a community responsibility and endeavor. In addition, the materials suggest the use of a secondary theme that reflects a particular organization's special interest or concern related to improving the lives of children and families. A sample proclamation of National Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Month is included in the packet, along with a fact sheet on child abuse and neglect. A list of just-released publications on child abuse is provided, together with a list of publications planned for release in 1993-94. Materials on the dangers of shaking a baby are also included, along with an outline of 93 ideas for celebrating Child Abuse Prevention Month in 1993. An NCPCA chapter directory is provided, and suggestions are offered for selecting a secondary theme for the month. Other materials address the most frequently asked questions about child abuse and neglect, a new strategy for preventing child abuse, enlisting the media as a partner in prevention, the description of a video on the importance of love for a child, and a catalog of NCPCA resource materials. Reproducible publicity materials, tips for successful collaboration, and a form for evaluating the resource packet are also provided.
