This article presents an overview of workplace and school violence and approaches and programs designed to prevent violence in both the workplace and schools.
Abstract
Along with the rapid development of technology and innovation in the workplace over the past 20 years, has come the development of the problem of workplace violence. This situation has prompted a change in the safety of the American workplace. Considerable attention and research has involved the causes of workplace violence, the types of characteristics of the perpetrators, and the presence of warning signs. This article begins with an overview of workplace violence presenting the definition and causes of workplace violence. In the United States, companies and organizations have developed a number of tools and techniques to meet the challenge of workplace violence and help reduce an organization’s chances of being devastated by an act of violence; some of these tools, techniques and programs are presented. Due to an in increase in incidences of school violence over the past several years, the United States has developed a significant concern for the issue. Many school safety and violence prevention programs and guidelines agree that a good plan must be comprehensive and multifaceted. Workplace and school violence prevention programs have been developed and implemented within numerous companies, organizations, and schools with some indications that they have been effective. However, future research is strongly recommended on the incidence of workplace and school violence since research in this area is a relatively recent undertaking. References
